I attended The University of Western Ontario for undergraduate studies focused on health promotion in the context of individual and population health. As a strong proponent of the biopsychosocial framework to health, I embarked onto medical school. My unique experiences while living and studying abroad in St. Vincent and Chicago allowed me to form rich relationships with patients. Engaging with my community and caring for patients exposed to violence and trauma helped me actualize how medicine transcends the clinic setting. I’ve worked with Chicago - based rapper Vic Mensa and Toronto - based Indigenous artist Que Rock to raise awareness on the importance of culturally based care. I am an advocate for grass-roots community organizations that serve marginalized groups, youth, and BIPOC populations. After graduating from medical school, I chose to broaden my knowledge and skill set by entering the world of virtual medicine. I am passionate about mental health, chronic disease burden and BIPOC wellness. This lead me to pursuing a diploma in lifestyle medicine through the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. I strive to integrate my educational background with my lived experiences to uphold a holistic practice. My goal is to inspire and empower people to take ownership of their wellbeing by making positive health behaviour changes. I am a health advocate and have spoken to youth groups at the University of Manitoba as well as community organizations and public schools across the Greater Toronto Area. Outside of work, I enjoy walking, hot chocolate, exploring vibrant cities, solo travelling, boxing, nature, sippin' chai in eclectic coffee shops and personal growth!
Lifestyle Medicine has become the fastest growing medical specialty; it is evidence-based and acknowledges the same pathophysiology and disease etiology as allopathic medicine. Lifestyle medicine is distinctly impactful because of its collaborative approach to health. Lifestyle medicine incorporates an interdisciplinary team and offers therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treating chronic conditions. Lifestyle medicine approaches health from a holistic lens and emphasizes health promotion and positive health behaviour changes. The six pillars of lifestyle medicine include a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections. Dr. Prerana received her board certification in Lifestyle Medicine in December 2021 through the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. Learn more here https://lifestylemedicine.org/about-us/
From Mysore to Mississauga, London to Ratho Mill, and finally Chicago to Toronto. I've had the privilege of living, learning, and growing in India, St. Vincent, USA, and Canada. In March 2021, I had the stark realization that life was happening to me. I wasn't an active participant in my life. I had unquestionably immersed myself in a field of study for 10 years only to find myself questioning everything I had ever been taught. Including myself. Board exams were a marker of time and my scores a reflection of my self worth. I was going to become a doctor, I had a purpose in life. But, I had completely lost myself. I guess this was rock bottom. I was stuck in the pond muck beneath the water. Here, I was forced to self-reflect and consequently flower into a beautiful lotus. I didn't find myself. I found the inspiration to create myself.

Sky's The Limit
It wasn’t until the end of my medical education that I began to understand what medicine truly was. I witnessed a concept [health] that was forever evolving but always rooted in the basics. I’ve travelled the world, hit rock bottom and found the courage to stand up again! The biggest challenge of my journey has been unlearning. Unlearning the poor lifestyle practices and negative thought patterns that perpetuate disease. Studying lifestyle medicine has been extremely gratifying and I strive daily to embody its principles. I look forward to upholding these values and sharing knowledge such that you are inspired to create your best self!
